Chaos at Howe Community Park Leaves Multiple Gunshot Victims in Sacramento's Arden-Arcade

Sacramento authorities are investigating a violent incident that took place Saturday evening at Howe Park at the moment deputies were shutting down an unauthorized event of several hundred people.

Background

Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies were first called to the Arden-Arcade park at approximately 6:30 PM after learning of individuals who may have had concealed firearms. Not long after, a second caller reported describing an alleged brawl taking place within the park grounds.

Air support searched from above but came back with no confirmation of a fight. However, authorities discovered that a massive group had packed into the park without permission.

The Dispersal and Shooting

Law enforcement personnel worked to disperse the crowd by surrounding the park and announcing over their public address systems instructing the assembled crowd to leave immediately. Nearly 15 minutes were provided for the gathering to break up.

At the height of the dispersal effort that an estimated 20 to 25 shots echoed through the night. Gunfire sent hundreds fleeing. Officers immediately began looking for those injured.

Four Gunshot Victims

Ultimately, four gunshot victims were identified as having gunshot wounds. The shooting victims — made up of one woman and three men all reportedly in their early to late twenties — were airlifted or driven to hospitals in the Sacramento area. Medical personnel indicated that two victims sustained immediate injuries, one person had injuries of a moderate nature, and one victim's wounds were minor. As of last report, all four were in stable condition.

Sacramento fire crews assisted at the location and assisted with medical triage those with gunshot wounds at the park.

The Investigation

The primary shooting scene was determined to have unfolded along Cottage Way next to the local Home Depot at the 2200 Howe Avenue block. Round impacts were also found in the wrought iron fence near the Home Depot. This evidence indicated that a second shooter had been firing southward from the Cottage Way area in the direction of the Home Depot. The Home Depot was secured under a brief lockdown as a precaution. Forensic investigators and law enforcement detectives remained on scene through the early morning hours.

Detainees in Solano County

Intelligence received via scanner audio confirmed that a Kia vehicle had been stopped in the Solano County area. Four people were in the vehicle at the time of the stop. Sacramento law enforcement were sent to retrieve the detainees to transport the detainees for formal questioning. Surveillance footage revealed that there were two gunmen.
